VHF Range Formula
The range of a VHF signal is primarily limited by line-of-sight to the horizon. The formula is:
Range (nm) = 1.23 × (√h₁ + √h₂)
Where h is antenna height in feet above water.
Antenna Height Impact
Antenna height is the most critical factor affecting VHF range. Even small increases in height significantly extend your range due to the square root relationship.
Example: Doubling height from 10ft to 20ft increases range by ~41%.
Testing Your VHF
Use this simulator to plan your VHF testing. Start with primary channels (16 & 09), then test location-specific channels based on nearby Coast Guard stations and landmarks.
Always monitor Channel 16 when operating.
